Farran House was originally built in Georgian times but was extensively remodelled and enlarged in 1863, though the splendid classical gates of the earlier house remain. Today Farran House is a large, elegant late Victorian house, perched high above the valley of the River Lee in the rolling hills of County Cork, surrounded by 12 acres of mature beech woods and rhododendron gardens.

The house has been carefully restored and modernised but every care has been taken to retain its original character and charm. All bedrooms have beautiful views over the surrounding countryside, with antique furnishings and large bathrooms. The main rooms are also extremely comfortable with wonderful views. Guests may play the grand piano in the drawing room and the billiard room has a full-size table for an after dinner game.

There is a lot to do while staying at Farran House. There are six 18-hole golf courses within 20 miles, fly fishing for salmon and trout on the rivers Lee and Bandon and several riding stables within easy reach. There are lovely scenic walks along the valley of the river, particularly after it widens into a lake to feed the hydro-electric station at Iniscarra.

The mediaeval castle and abbey of Kilcrea are just across the river, Blarney Castle is nearby too, and from turbulent Ireland's more recent history is Beal na mBlath, the Vale of the Flowers, site of the ambush where one of the great leaders of Ireland's Independence met his death at the hands of his Republican rivals, as is shown in the recent film, Michael Collins.

Cork city and airport are only half an hour away yet Killarney, on the Ring of Kerry, is less than an hour in the opposite direction. The fishing and yachting town of Kinsale, famous for the number and variety of its excellent restaurants, is an easy drive away and a day trip to the rugged West Cork coast is well worthwhile.

Farran House is a perfect base for exploring County Cork and County Kerry.
